If it showed the last time the file was accessed (is that possible?) it could help me determine whether it might be ancient leftovers of something deleted long ago.

As people have noted, windows software often uses cryptic and meaningless file names. While seeing the location is helpful, when it's in a folder shared by many programs, that's not enough. If I could see the last time a file was accessed, that would give me some idea of its possible importance.
